Delicious Library (Software)
by Orlando Luna
This is one software you will look at and place in the "Why didn't I think of that" category. Delicious Library created by Delicious Moster Software is a database designed to store information about your DVD's, Books and Software. In itself not innovative, but sometimes how you get from point a to point b is where the innvation is. This may be the first software that really utilizes you Mac OS X and accessories the way they should be used.
The database itself is visually striking. The software is divided into two main panes and a third pane which pops up when needed. The left pane consisits of categories and borrowers and the main pane is made up of a choice between a list view and a graphical shelf look. The third pane is made up of three options (selectable on the bottom) including details, my stuff and similiar.
You can manually enter info but the way you really want to enter info is using the power of the internet and your iSight Firewire cam. Make sure you do not have iChat running to avoid a conflict over which software can utilize your iSight. On screen you end up getting is a Black and White video feed with red horizontal lines running across the Video Feed. Grab that Book, DVD (VHS Videos too) or Software, find the barcode and hold it up to your camera (make sure you have sufficient light). The software reads the barcode info and grabs all the info regarding the product including a beautiful graphic from the internet. This is not infallable as I found that occasionally it would not recognize a product or the graphic would not be available. In the popup pane you can go to your area and apply notes or other info that becomes attached to the item. In addition the Similiar option in your popup pane is a direct link to Amazon which shows you products similiar to what you have selected.
Once you have the product in your database you can create new lists for sorting or drag and drop sort. As a sidebar the software gives you access to your Mac OS X Address book where you can drag and drop to a borrower which autmatically creates a check out with a due date.
This product is terrific for keeping track of your media in a dynamic way. Side uses may include the creation of insurance lists. I would love to see it expanded to be able to scan other items in, but as version 1.0 product for media, they hit a home run.
